People with gluten #intolerance can either have #celiac #disease which is a #genetic #autoimmune disorder that can damage the #villi in the small #intestine and cause #malabsorption, or they can have a condition called non-celiac gluten sensitivity in which tests for celiac come back negative but #symptoms are present. In both cases, people may experience all kinds of general symptoms such as abdominal pain, #diarrhea, #constipation, #bloating, #vomiting, #fatigue, #tiredness, #anemia, an itchy rash, #migraine #headaches, #inflammation and joint pain, unexplained infertility, delayed growth and puberty in children, #osteoporosis and other #neurological and #psychological symptoms. This makes it difficult to diagnose gluten intolerance and the majority of people suffering from these conditions are left undiagnosed. A gluten-free #diet in the only solution and that means eliminating all wheat, barley, rye and gluten containing products and replacing them with #quinoa, #corn, #rice, gluten-free #oats, #buckwheat, #millet, #potato and other gluten-free grains and flours. However, and contrary to popular beliefs, gluten-free #diets do not help people lose #weight. In fact, many gluten-free products on the market have higher amounts of #sugar or #fat and can be heavily #processed. Therefore, a gluten-free diet is not recommended for people who do not suffer from gluten intolerance.
