How To Make Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are one of the healthiest foods on the planet. They may not be the tastiest, but they are very nutritious. The darker green the vegetables, the more nutrients they contain. Some of the nutrients that are found in dark green vegetables include calcium, sodium, iron and other minerals, as well as vitamin K, A, C, E and many B vitamins as well. The beauty of leafy green smoothies is that they are rich with nutrients, but low in calories, so making them perfect for losing extra weight.

As already mentioned, leafy green smoothies are not the tastiest food on the planet. Therefore, if you are new to the raw food diet, or to green smoothies, then you might not like them at first. But then as you get accustomed to them, your taste buds will no longer mind the bitterness.

So to get accustomed to green smoothies, it is important to use fruit in with your leafy greens. When you first make the green smoothie, you should use at least as much fruit as leafy greens. Opt for sweet fruits such as bananas, mangoes, peaches and blueberries; as they will help to neutralize some of the bitterness, as well as add some sweetness to the green smoothie. You can also add in a natural sweetener such as agave nectar, raw honey or stevia for even more sweetness. Stevia is available in different forms such as a liquid or a powder, but you can also grow your own stevia plant, and simply add in fresh stevia leaves for sweetness.

Once you are accredited to having greens in your smoothie, then you can slowly begin to add more. The greens that you choose can be anything from lettuce, kale, beet greens, spinach and onion greens. You can also use green herbs such as cilantro, parsley, rosemary and any others that you like. Carrots, celery, tomatoes and peppers can also be added for extra flavor. The key however, is to blend foods that compliment each other such as tomatoes, cilantro, carrots and celery.

To take away some of the bitterness of the greens, you can add lemon or lime juice and sea salt for flavoring. If you have organic lemons, then you can even throw in the whole lemon with the peel. But due to chemicals on conventionally grown lemons, you should juice the lemon and throw away the peel.

Green smoothies are a great way to get the day started, as they can provide you with lots of energy to keep you going through the day.
