Each year, millions and millions of dollars are spent on fad diets. People are looking for a quick and easy way to lose the pounds. We buy pills, diet drinks, all kinds of exercise equipment, just because someone said that using them will make us lose weight quickly. Usually when you use a fad diet to lose weight, the weight will come off. But it will come right back as soon as you stop the diet. And it's not possible to continue the diet forever because it is unhealthy. There are ways for you to lose the weight and keep it off without possibly doing damage to your body.
On the surface, fad diets do work – you can lose weight quickly. The problem is when you take laxatives or other diuretics to lose weight, you are not losing fat, you are losing water in your body. Your body needs water to operate efficiently so it will start to hang on to what fluids it can. When the fad diet is over and you start eating or drinking again, your body will accumulate that fluid right back and back will come the weight.
If you need to lose a few pounds quickly for a special event, some fad diets will do the job. But it is not a way to jumpstart your weight loss program. Many people start a highly restrictive food plan which is basically fasting. Initially you will lose weight, but then your body will go into starvation mode because it does not know when it will get more food. During starvation mode, you body's metabolism slows down to keep from using up all the energy (in the form of food). When your metabolism slows down, your body does not burn as many calories – and you do not lose weight.
If you're looking for long-term weight loss try some of the following tips to lose weight the healthy way.
Drink a lot of water. As I said, our bodies need water to run efficiently. When it is running well, we can burn calories.
Stay away from empty calories such as sodas and alcohol. Fruit juices are not that healthy either. You are better off eating the actual fruit, you get more fiber and vitamins that way.
Try to eat a meatless meal a couple of times a week. Eating a meal composed mainly of whole grains, beans and vegetables will increase fiber and reduce fat in your diet.
Try to get four servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit every day. Vegetables and other high fiber foods, make you feel fuller longer because they take longer to digest. Vegetables will also increase your metabolism because they use up more energy while digesting.
