The French Paradox – The Red Wines of France

A high intake of saturated fats in our diet is said to be the major cause of cardio vascular diseases. However the French people are seen to have a low incidence of coronary heart disease even though their food is rich in saturated fats. This is known as 'the French paradox.'

The French cuisine is complete without wine and cheese. Many varieties of wine are available in France. In fact the world's best wines like Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux are produced in France. The high consumption of Red wine is associated to the low incidence of heart disease in France.

There is a chemical called resveratrol in the ripe grapes which are used to make wine. This chemical helps to maintain a healthy heart. The compound resveratrol is obtained from foods such as grapes, peanuts etc. A high intake of red wine reduces the chances of heart disease, cancer and age-related diseases. Moreover resveratrol present in red wine also affects the blood sugar levels.

Red wine also helps to reduce the insulin secretion. Resveratrol in red wine improves the insulin action in a complex mechanism and makes changes in gene expression and also affects the activities of some enzymes. Thus prevention and cure of diabetes may be possible with the help of resveratrol.

French people eat a healthy diet with lots of fats still they are leaner and have a low incidence of heart diseases. This can also be due to the smaller portions served in French cuisines. Moreover the French people are known to eat their meals slowly. Eating slowly helps the food to be digested properly. Above all this the life style of French people is quite active. They are always seen to be on the move. Walking and cycling are preferred means of transport in many places in France.

Coronary heart disease is one of the major causes of death in many parts of the world. The main cause of coronary heart diseases is the consumption of food which is rich in saturated fats. These fats deposit on the arteries which supply blood and oxygen to the heart. The arteries become narrow due to the adherence of plaque or planned fats on its walls. This leads to the constriction of the arteries which may result in the increase of blood pressure.High blood pressure leads to heart diseases.

It is believed that the consumption of red wine may lead to the reduction of the coronary heart disease. It is always advisable to eat wisely and have a healthy routine which includes adequate amount of exercise. Some basic changes in our lifestyle may help us to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Thus 'the French Paradox' can be explained by understanding the food habits of the French people. Moreover the health benefits of Red Wine are due to the chemical Resveratrol found in the skin and seeds of grapes. Resveratrol is also known for its magical properties for defying age and other age-related disease like diabetes, cancer and so on.
