You’ve got a big party to go to. All of the assignments have been given out. It’s just your luck that you’ve been given the assignment for the cupcakes. Some other lucky person gets to bring the napkins and forks! Maybe you’ve never made them before or the last batch you made was a total failure. Either way, you’ve got some work ahead of you.
Before you even begin, you’ve got to gather everything you need. There is absolutely nothing worse than starting to bake and realizing you don’t have all the ingredients you need. It requires a quick trip to the store and usually takes the fun out of baking. When picking out ingredients, choose the best you can afford. If the main flavor of the cupcakes is vanilla, for instance, you need to use real vanilla instead of vanilla flavoring. Always use real butter. Unless a recipe specifically calls for margarine, it was created and tested with real butter. And butter has a richer flavor. Real chocolate chips are better than flavored chips. And so on.
Another important thing is gathering your equipment. Look at the recipe before you begin. If you don’t have a mixer, you will definitely need mixing bowls and a spoon. You may also need a sifter, measuring spoons, and cupcake tins. You may also choose to use cupcake liners. This is a great option especially if you are going to a party. They come in many colors and designs. And they make removing the cupcakes from the tin effortless.
The first step is making good cupcakes. They will be the base for all the decorating you choose to do. A good cupcake not only tastes great but has the right consistency. It shouldn’t crumble or be hard. But it can’t be too soft either or it won’t hold up your frosting. You may have to experiment with different recipes in order to find the right one. Pound cake is often a good choice. It’s firm but not hard and it never crumbles when the recipe is followed.
Decorating cupcakes is the fun part. You can do something simple or something intricate. You need to experiment with recipes to find the one you like the best. It’s all about consistency. Or if you’re tight on time, you can use something from the store. But it will never taste as good as homemade. So, give it your best shot and see what happens!
